About Us: Our Journey and Mission

Wil Jones is a Master of City Planning candidate and Research Associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he combines emerging technology with urban design to promote equitable development. In December 2023, he joined MIT’s 2024 DesignX Cohort, spearheading a groundbreaking project that used generative AI to enhance community engagement in urban planning. This initiative not only fostered inclusive design but also considered the ethical implications of AI in Black communities. In January 2024, he founded Mí.katã Design Group, which evolved into METRO (Marginalized Engagement Through Radical Outreach) by July 2024. METRO’s mission is to leverage advanced technology and community involvement to transform urban spaces into vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable environments. Committed to driving impactful change, METRO partners with stakeholders to develop innovative urban planning solutions for a more equitable and resilient future.

Wil Jones is an Urban Planner, Community Designer, and Master of City Planning candidate at MIT, where he also serves as a Research Associate at the MIT Leventhal Center for Advanced Urbanism & Civic Data Design Lab. He led the development of People Powered AI: A Generative AI Playbook for Civic Engagement, a comprehensive guide that empowers city officials and community organizations to adopt GenAI tools ethically and effectively in civic engagement. Central to the playbook is its emphasis on creating interactive and inclusive platforms that enhance public participation, particularly aiming to increase representation and engagement from Black and diverse communities in urban planning processes.

As the Founder of METRO.AI, Wil advances equitable, technology-driven solutions for urban transformation. Previously, he managed a $46 million resilience fund at The Rockefeller Foundation, supporting over 7,500 businesses with a focus on equity and inclusion. Recognized for his innovative approach to community engagement, he earned the “Best Presentation” award at MITDesignX 2024. Through METRO.AI, Wil continues to drive impactful, inclusive change in urban planning.
